After two
days of rain the sun finally came out in time for the off-road
competition on the Sunday. The off-roading at Tong lived up to
its reputation, lots of steep
climbs, mud and water.
The start of the competition
course was a steep climb up a
narrow gully with a sharp right-hand turn half way
up.

Right on the turn is a nasty little
pot hole that throws you down onto the
bank.

With a long wheelbase that's as far
as you get even if you give it lots of
whelly.......

...CJ 5's and 7's made it up in
style

The next section took you into the
woods but was abandoned after the first 3 Jeeps had to be
winched out leaving a queue of
Jeeps waiting at the
start.....

When the jam was finally cleared it
was onto the next section which started in the ruts.... there
was no backing-up - you had to exit the ruts for a sharp right
hand drop off in one go!!!

they proved to deep for
some.........

dropping down into the wood for a
tight section through the trees.

This section was
definitely designed for the short wheel base
vehicles...

thankfully the
wheel
arches are fairly flexible!

If there was any doubt
that the course was designed for short wheelbase Jeeps the
next section really confirmed it....

who put that tree
there?

Oh... I think we're
stuck!

...it's no good... out with
the winch

...As I said lots of
water!...

passable with a well
lifted Jeep and snorkel

...and if you don't have a major
lift.....

I suspect that this will
prove to be an expensive lesson...

All round a really good event at a
great site. Let's hope we get to go again next
year. Well done
